Ergonomics and Work-related Disorders Laboratory
The laboratory for Ergonomics and Work-related Disorders covers domains related to ergonomics, sensory manifestations and motor adaptation associated with work-related musculoskeletal disorders. The research activities are related to the design and test of systems and equipments aiming at prevention musculoskeletal disorders. For this purpose, advanced measurement and processing techniques are applied on subjective, physiological and biomechanical data collected in laboratory and field environment. Methods are developed to extract pertinent parameters for the identification of potential physical risk factors leading to the development of work-related musculoskeletal disorders.
Main Research Areas
- Test of equipment/devices/work techniques in real or simulated conditions like VR
E.g. mattress, input devices (computer mouse, joysticks), insoles, shoes, knives (poultry industry), trolley, containers.
- Development of feedback systems for the prevention of work-related musculoskeletal development
Development and test of intelligent biofeedback system based on surface electromyographic (EMG) and mechanomyographic (MMG) activity and to assess functional reorganization of muscles synergies in presence of localized muscle fatigue and muscle pain by means of multi-channels systems.
- Evaluation of human performance in occupational settings
Subjective, physiological and biomechanical quantification of occupational settings (e.g. cleaning, materials manual handling, pipetting, refuse collection, slaughterhouse, train employees) to provide solutions decreasing the amount of physical risk factors for work related musculoskeletal disorders.
- Assessment of functional adaptation in the shoulder girdle and the low back
Evaluation of functional reorganization of muscles synergies and reflex modulation. Assessments made in presence of localized muscle fatigue and muscle pain and in response to training by means of multi-channel EMG and MMG recordings.
- Development of methods for inducing and assessing variability in motor control
Implementation of new methods inducing and assessing the amplitude and structure of movement variability (kinematics and kinetic data) by means of linear and nonlinear approaches. Muscle synergy analyses.
