Smashing Techniques in Badminton

Last modified: 13.03.2017

According to the Danish TV channel TV2 Sport, professional badminton player Mads Pieler Kolding broke the record for the fastest badminton smash. A badminton smash is a chain of surprisingly fast and powerful movements of the body in which technique is much more important than strength. The movement happens so fast that it is impossible to understand while watching it.

Professor John Rasmussen, Department of Mechanical, Manufacturing and Management Engineering, and Associate Professor Mark de Zee, SMI, were therefore asked by the program Sportslab to investigate and explicate Kolding’s unique talent for smashing. The two researchers used technology to find the answer. They succeeded and Kolding broke his own world record in the process.
