He has published 730 publications and is first author of approximately 130 of them. Most papers concentrate on human pain research (experimental and clinical), drug screening and efficacy, interaction between motor control and pain and motor control.
The research activities have been concentrated on biomedical sciences within neuroscience. The specific research areas have been on pain and assessment of pain in volunteers and pain patients and on drug effects. The main focus is on human experimental pain research – basic and clinical applications. A substantial network of international collaborations with 15 different countries has been established with universities, hospitals, and the biomedical/pharmaceutical industry. Satellite laboratories have been established in six different countries.
Has participated in more than 250 international conferences with related published abstracts/proceedings and he has given several lectures at Danish and foreign universities and hospitals. Has given more than 180 invited lectures at international meetings/workshops/seminars.
Has supervised and completed 35 Ph.D. students over the last 15 years. Is founder of the Doctoral School for Biomedical Sciences and Engineering (65 enrolled Ph.D. students), been head of the International Doctoral School for Technology and Engineering (400 students enrolled), been head of Doctoral School for Industrial Researchers (70 students enrolled), and been head of the Academy for Doctoral Education at Aalborg University (all doctoral education at the University, 550 Ph.D. students), and has been member of the Danish Research Education Council.
